Not automatically. Students only need an NI number if they work (or plan to work) in the UK. Most UK students are sent an NI number automatically around their 16th birthday, but if you did not receive one, you can apply.

International students studying in the UK on a Student Visa may need an NI number if they take on part-time work. Student Visa holders are typically allowed to work:

• Up to 20 hours per week during term time (degree-level courses)
• Full-time during official university holidays
• Up to 10 hours per week for courses below degree level

You must have a valid NI number for any paid work you do as an international student.

Students applying for an NI number need:

• Valid passport (UK or foreign)
• Biometric Residence Permit (if applicable)
• Student visa / CAS document proving your right to study and work
• A UK address where you live during term time
• Your UKVI share code (for EU students with Settled Status)

If you work during term time as an international student, your employer must see proof of your right to work. This includes checking that your visa allows part-time work. Your NI number is then used by your employer to report your earnings and tax correctly. Working over your allowed hours can breach your visa conditions, so check your specific visa conditions carefully.

UK-domiciled students who are 16 or older are usually sent an NI number automatically just before their 16th birthday if they are registered for Child Benefit. If you did not receive one, or if you are over 16 and have never had an NI number, you can apply at any time. Having an NI number before you start your first job means you will not be put on an emergency tax code.
